We have explored the stories of Panchami, Shasti in previous blog. Now lets move on to Saptami tithi. Saptami is the 7th tithi of Lunar cycle and its diety if Lord Surya. But how and why did Lord Surya get Saptami tithi? Lets read below.

When creation began, the eternal soul, which was the power of knowledge, desired to form a second. From that desire, light emerged. This light came to be known as Surya, also called Bhaskara and Bhasman. Its brilliance spread across the three worlds and filled them with radiance. Within that light were seen all the gods, Siddhas, and sages.

Since it was self-born, it came to be called Surya. From that radiant essence, a part of the hidden lustre took shape and assumed a body. The Vedic seers called this form Ravi. Because it illumines all the worlds, it became the source of light for all creation.

When light took form, it became known as Surya. Because it brings the day, it was called Divakara. As it marks the beginning of creation, it came to be known as Aditya. From its brilliance arose twelve suns, and among them, one became the principal sun that now moves around the world.

When the gods saw its radiance spreading throughout the universe, they emerged and offered praise. They recognized it as the first-born of creation, the one who sustains the world and brings it to an end at the time of dissolution. With its rising, life awakens across the three worlds. They said that it was the source of light in every sacrifice, riding upon a chariot drawn by seven swift steeds.

They called it Prabhakara, Ravi, Adideva — the soul of all that moves and stands still. It was said to be Brahma, Varuna, and Yama, the essence of past and future alike. The gods declared that it was the Veda itself, the radiance that destroys all enemies, the one who reveals himself through Vedanta and is known in sacrifices as Vishnu. They prayed for protection and sought its grace.

Hearing their praise, the Sun softened its brilliance and shone gently upon the gods. Its fierce radiance was subdued, and peace returned to them. This took place on the Saptami tithi, the day on which the Sun became embodied.

Whoever worships Surya on this day attains the fulfillment of all desires. This ancient story of the Sun has been told since the earliest ages, and thus ends the tale of Surya’s manifestation.
